Ella, tea terraces
and slow trains

A small hill-country town wrapped in cloud forest and tea, where the pace drops the moment you step off the train, and the island's most photographed bridge waits just outside town.

The story

The island's coolest corner, in every sense

Ella sits at just over 1,000 metres, where the heat of the lowlands finally breaks into something closer to spring. Tea bushes run in tight green rows up every hillside, cloud drifts through the valley most mornings, and the famous blue train from Kandy edges along a ridge line so scenic it regularly tops "world's best rail journeys" lists.

The town itself is small, one main street of cafés, guesthouses and tour operators, but it's the launchpad for everything around it: the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana Falls, and tea estates that welcome walk-in visitors for a factory tour and a cup grown a few metres from where you're standing.
