At the summit of Adam's Peak sits a rock formation venerated by Buddhists as the Buddha's footprint, by Hindus as Shiva's, by Muslims and Christians as Adam's first step on Earth after Eden. Pilgrims of all faiths climb together, mostly through the night, so as to reach the top for sunrise.
The 5,500-step ascent is lit end to end during pilgrimage season, lined with tea stalls run by locals who climb it daily. At the top, if conditions align, climbers witness the mountain's famous shadow, a perfect triangle cast across the clouds at dawn.

Where we’d stay
There are only two ways to do this. Sleep in the pilgrim village at the foot of the steps and walk to the trail at two in the morning, or stay in the tea country around Hatton and drive over. The first four below are the tea country; the last three are the village.
