Adam’s Peak,
climbed in the dark

Sacred to four faiths and climbed almost entirely at night, Sri Pada's 5,500 steps end at a summit shrine and a sunrise view across the island that pilgrims have made for over a thousand years.

The story

One mountain, four religions

At the summit of Adam's Peak sits a rock formation venerated by Buddhists as the Buddha's footprint, by Hindus as Shiva's, by Muslims and Christians as Adam's first step on Earth after Eden. Pilgrims of all faiths climb together, mostly through the night, so as to reach the top for sunrise.

The 5,500-step ascent is lit end to end during pilgrimage season, lined with tea stalls run by locals who climb it daily. At the top, if conditions align, climbers witness the mountain's famous shadow, a perfect triangle cast across the clouds at dawn.
