Hill country

Little Adam’s Peak, at sunrise

By The Pearl EditionElla5 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

Leave Ella in the dark, with a torch and a jumper, and by the time the birds start you are on a ridge above the clouds. The valley below is still full of mist. Then the sun comes up over the hills to the east and turns the whole of it gold.

Little Adam’s Peak is the easiest great walk in Sri Lanka. It is short, it is gentle, and it gives you one of the best views in the hill country for very little effort. Done at sunrise, before the day-trippers arrive, it is the best hour you will spend in Ella.

The short answer

It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to walk up from the trailhead, which is around 15 minutes from town. Go for sunrise: start an hour before dawn with a torch. It is easy enough for most people, children included.

The walk

From Ella, follow the Passara road out of town and turn off towards the trailhead. The path climbs gently through tea, past pickers starting their morning, then steepens into a run of steps for the last stretch. At the top, a ridge runs out along the hill with drops on either side and views in every direction.

Keep going past the first viewpoint. The path continues along the ridge to quieter spots, and the further you go, the fewer people you share the sunrise with.

Sunrise, or sunset

Sunrise is the reason to come. Leave Ella about an hour before dawn, which is around 6am for most of the year, and take a torch for the first part of the path. The air is cool, the valley below is full of cloud, and you will have the summit nearly to yourself.

Late afternoon is the second choice: the light is warm and the walk is pleasant, but you will share it with many more people. Avoid the middle of the day, when it is hot and busy and the haze flattens the view.

The zipline

On the way, you will pass the Flying Ravana zipline, a long line of around half a kilometre that runs out over the tea. It is a good way to come back down if you have the nerve, and costs in the region of US$35. Prices at the gate can differ from those online.

A morning in Ella, done properly

The perfect order: sunrise on Little Adam’s Peak, breakfast back in town, then a slow walk to the Nine Arch Bridge for the mid-morning train. You are back before the heat of the day. The Nine Arch Bridge →

If you have the legs for more, Ella Rock is the bigger hike: about three hours there and back, steep near the top, and done without a guide by most people. Save it for a second day.

What to bring

A torch or head torch, a light jacket for the summit before dawn, proper shoes, water, and something for breakfast at the top if you want to linger. Leave very early and you will be back for a second, better breakfast at your hotel.

Where you sleep makes the early start easier. Several of Ella’s best hotels sit on the hillside below the peak. Where to stay in Ella →
