The world's most reliable blue whale season

Sri Lanka's south coast has one of the most consistent blue whale sighting records anywhere on Earth, thanks to a deep continental shelf running close to shore. Licensed boats leave Mirissa harbour before dawn, when seas are calmest and whales are often still surfacing to breathe after a night of feeding.

Trips run in small groups with a marine naturalist aboard, keeping a respectful distance under Sri Lanka's whale-watching guidelines. Sperm whales, spinner dolphins and the occasional orca pod are also regularly seen on the same run.
