Depuis la France

One stop from Paris, and worth every hour

France is among Sri Lanka’s top ten source markets worldwide and one of the three European markets driving arrivals, alongside the UK and Germany. There is no nonstop from Paris — the Gulf carriers do the work, and they do it well.

The route

No nonstop, and it barely matters

Paris Charles de Gaulle connects to Colombo through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, typically in fourteen to seventeen hours door to door. Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Toulouse feed the same hubs, which means a traveller leaving Bordeaux is not meaningfully worse off than one leaving Paris.

France consistently ranks among the top three European source markets for Sri Lanka, alongside the UK and Russia, and it is one of the six markets named in the island’s 2026 global tourism campaign. The creative aimed at France leads on cultural heritage and wellness rather than beaches, which reflects how French visitors actually travel here: longer trips, more of the interior, more interest in ayurveda than in a lounger.

The Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the southern coast fit comfortably into a fortnight, which is close to the standard French holiday length.

When to go

When French travellers actually go

The two French holiday windows fall on opposite sides of the island’s weather. Both work, but they send you to different coasts.

Déc – Mars
Vacances d’hiver
The south and west at their driest. The main season, and the one to book early.
Fév
Vacances de février
Peak dry season on the south coast, and the easiest weather of the year for the Cultural Triangle.
Juil – Août
Grandes vacances
The south is wet; go east. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are dry, and Kandy’s Perahera falls here.
Oct – Nov
Toussaint
Inter-monsoon rain across much of the island. Cheapest flights, hardest routing.

Entry

What your passport needs

Free is not the same as not required

Your country is on the list of forty nationalities that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee has gone; the authorisation has not. You apply online before departure. The airline checks it at check-in, and immigration can check it again on arrival. The fee waiver was announced as a temporary scheme, so check it still applies when you book.

The ETA gives thirty days with double entry, and your passport must be valid for six months from the date you land. The full entry guide →

Shaping the trip

Four ways to spend three weeks

01
Heritage first
Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy and Galle. Six of the eight UNESCO sites in under two weeks, which is close to unmatched at this distance.
02
Ayurveda
A genuine treatment programme runs two to three weeks, not a weekend. Several of the serious houses are on the west coast, in season from December.
03
Wildlife and hiking
Yala and Udawalawe, the Knuckles range, Horton Plains and Adam’s Peak. Sri Lanka rewards walkers more than its reputation suggests.
04
The long trip
French visitors stay longer than most, and three weeks lets you add the east or the north without rushing. Jaffna in particular repays the extra time.

Common questions

The things people actually ask

Are there direct flights from France to Sri Lanka?

Frankfurt is the only French airport with a nonstop service to Colombo, flown by SriLankan Airlines. From Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Hamburg you connect, most often through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul.

Do French citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

France is one of forty countries whose nationals receive the tourist ETA free of charge, a change in force since 25 May 2026. The authorisation is still required: apply online before departure, because the airline checks it at the gate.

When is the best time to travel from France?

December to March for the south and west coasts, which lines up with the French winter. July and August work if you go to the east coast instead, which is in its own dry season then.

How long should the trip be?

French visitors typically stay longer than other European markets, and Sri Lanka rewards it. Two weeks covers the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and one coast; three weeks lets you add the east or the north.

Is Sri Lanka good for ayurveda?

It is one of the few places where the tradition is practised rather than adapted for spa menus. A genuine treatment programme runs two to three weeks under supervision, and several of the established houses sit on the west coast, in season from December.

Is the Kandy to Ella train running?

Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch, the scenic part, reopened on 20 June 2026, and you reach Nanu Oya by road.
