A 5th-century fortress carved into and built atop a 200-metre column of rock, rising alone from the jungle plain, one of the most complete ancient sites left standing anywhere in Asia.
The story
In the fifth century, King Kashyapa seized the throne from his father and, fearing revenge from his exiled brother, moved his entire court to the top of this sheer rock outcrop. What he built in the years that followed, water gardens, mirror-polished walls, frescoes of celestial maidens, and a palace on the summit, remains one of the most sophisticated feats of urban planning from the ancient world.
The king ruled from his rock for eleven years before his brother returned. Today the climb takes most visitors ninety minutes to two hours, passing the famous Lion's Paw entrance and the surviving frescoes, before opening onto the summit and a 360-degree view across the plains, well worth the steps.
