Melbourne to Colombo went direct on 25 August. For the first time an Australian carrier flies the route, and Sri Lanka has stopped being a connection through somewhere else.
What changed
Until August 2026, SriLankan was the only nonstop option. Most Australians still flew via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf, and lost a day each way. On 25 August 2026 a Jetstar 787 landed at Bandaranaike with 271 passengers aboard, the first service by an Australian carrier on the route. It runs three times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and adds more than a hundred thousand seats a year.
SriLankan Airlines already flew direct from both Sydney and Melbourne, so this is not the first direct service. It is the first low-cost one, and that changes the arithmetic of a short trip. Ten hours each way with no transfer puts Colombo in roughly the same time bracket as Tokyo, and closer than most of Europe.
The timing is not accidental. Sri Lanka Tourism named Australia its first priority market when it launched its global campaign in August, and Victoria is home to the largest Sri Lankan community in the country. Whether you are visiting family or the island itself, the journey just got materially shorter.

When to go
Two monsoons arrive at opposite ends of the island, which means the Australian summer and the Australian winter each line up with a dry coast. Very few long-haul destinations offer that.
Entry
Free is not the same as not required
Australia is on the list of forty countries that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee is gone. The authorisation is not: you apply online before departure, the airline checks it at check-in, and immigration can check it again in Colombo. The fee waiver was announced as a temporary scheme, so check it still applies when you book.

Yes, and there are more of them since August 2026. Jetstar began flying Melbourne to Colombo direct on 25 August 2026, three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with a flight time of about ten hours. SriLankan Airlines also flies direct to Colombo from both Sydney and Melbourne.

Australia is one of the forty nationalities that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, a change that took effect on 25 May 2026. Free does not mean unnecessary: you still apply online before you fly, and the authorisation is checked at the departure gate.
Both of the usual Australian holiday windows work, which is unusual for a single destination. The December to March school holidays line up with the dry season on the south and west coasts. The mid-year winter break lines up with the dry season on the east coast and in the north.
Ten to fourteen days for a first trip. It is a ten-hour flight, and the island rewards a slower route more than a rushed one. If you only have a week, choose two regions and stay put rather than trying to loop the country.
Comparable once you are on the ground, and often better value at the top end. A boutique or villa stay in Sri Lanka typically costs well under the equivalent in the more established Indian Ocean destinations, and a private driver for the whole trip is affordable in a way that surprises most first-time visitors.
Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch reopened on 20 June 2026, and you reach Nanu Oya by road. Any itinerary written before November 2025 needs redrawing.
