From China
Guangzhou to Colombo is shorter than Guangzhou to Beijing. Sri Lanka is closer to southern China than most of the destinations competing for the same holiday.
The route
Direct services connect Colombo with Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu, flown by SriLankan Airlines alongside Chinese carriers. From Guangzhou the flight is under six hours, which puts Sri Lanka nearer than a good number of domestic routes and well inside the range of a one-week holiday.
China is one of six markets named in Sri Lanka’s 2026 global tourism campaign, and the creative aimed at it leads on air connectivity and group itineraries rather than on beaches. That reflects how the market actually travels here: organised circuits, cultural sights, and a preference for seeing several places rather than settling into one.
The island suits that better than most. Eight UNESCO World Heritage sites sit inside a country you can drive across in a day, and a private vehicle with a driver-guide for a group of six to twelve costs a fraction of the European equivalent.
When to go
Two of the three main Chinese travel windows fall in good weather. The third is the one that needs planning.
Entry
Free is not the same as not required
China is on the list of forty nationalities receiving the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee has gone; the authorisation has not. You apply online before departure, and the airline checks it at the gate rather than immigration checking it on arrival.

Yes, from several mainland cities. Direct services run from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu, operated by SriLankan Airlines alongside Chinese carriers. Guangzhou is the shortest hop at under six hours; Shanghai and Beijing run longer. Frequencies change by season, so confirm with the airline.
China is one of forty countries whose nationals receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. It remains mandatory. You apply online before departure and the airline checks the authorisation at the gate, not on arrival in Colombo.
It is the one window that needs thought. Early October falls in the second inter-monsoon, when rain reaches much of the island at once. It is not impossible, but it rewards routing toward the Cultural Triangle rather than the coasts, and it is the cheapest time of year to fly.
Chinese New Year lands in the dry season on the south and west coasts, which makes it close to ideal weather-wise, though it is also Sri Lanka's high season. The summer holidays in July and August suit the east coast and the north instead.
Ten days covers the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and one coast comfortably. A week works if you pick two regions and stay put rather than trying to loop the island.
It suits it well. Distances are short, the main sights cluster into a compact circuit, and private drivers with vehicles for six to twelve are widely available and inexpensive. The constraint is beds at the top end during high season, so book early.
Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch reopened on 18 July 2026 and you reach Nanu Oya by road.
