From Russia

Under nine hours,
and no visa fee

Russia is one of the six markets Sri Lanka is spending its 2026 campaign budget on, and from October the direct route is back. The winter holidays land squarely in the dry season.

The route

The winter escape that just got shorter

Aeroflot returns to Sheremetyevo–Colombo nonstop on 3 October 2026, three times a week on a Boeing 777-300ER. The flight is about eight hours fifty-five minutes. SriLankan Airlines also flies Moscow from Domodedovo in roughly eight hours twenty, so for the first time in a while there are two nonstop options rather than a Gulf connection and a long layover.

That matters more here than on most routes. Connecting through Dubai or Doha turns a nine-hour flight into a twelve-to-fourteen-hour day, and it is the single thing that has kept Sri Lanka behind Thailand and the Maldives in the Russian market. Nonstop closes most of that gap.

The timing is deliberate. Sri Lanka named Russia one of six priority markets for its 2026 digital campaign, ahead of a full global relaunch in 2027. The October start puts the aircraft in place for the New Year holidays, which is when Russians travel and when the south coast is at its driest.

When to go

The holidays and the dry season agree

The Russian New Year break and the south-west dry season fall in the same weeks. December to March is when Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle and Bentota are reliably dry and the hill country is clear — and it is exactly when Moscow is not. For a two-week holiday starting 30 December, the island is about as in-season as it gets.

Dec – Mar
The main window
South and west coasts at their driest while Britain is at its darkest. Galle, Mirissa, the Cultural Triangle. Book well ahead, especially over Christmas.
Apr
Easter
Sinhala and Tamil New Year and the shoulder season. Good for the Cultural Triangle and the hill country, and quieter than the peak.
Jul – Aug
Summer holidays
The south is wet but the east is dry. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, plus Kandy’s Esala Perahera in one of those two months.
Oct – Nov
Harder
The inter-monsoon brings rain widely. Possible with careful routing, and the cheapest time to fly.

Entry

Free is not the same as not required

Russia was one of the original seven nationalities on Sri Lanka’s free visa scheme, and since 25 May 2026 the free tourist ETA has covered forty countries. You pay nothing. What you still do is apply online before you fly, at eta.gov.lk — the fee was waived, the authorisation was not.

It is a 30-day tourist ETA with double entry, extendable to six months through the Department of Immigration once you are there. Passports need six months’ validity from arrival. Airlines have denied boarding to people who assumed free meant on arrival, so carry the approval.

Shaping the trip

Four ways to spend two weeks

01
The classic loop
Cultural Triangle, hill country, south coast. Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, tea country by train, then a week on the beach. The standard first trip, and the right one for a New Year booking.
02
Beach, and only beach
If the point is winter sun, skip the loop. Base yourself once on the south coast and stay put — Bentota for calm water and families, Mirissa for whales in season, Tangalle for quiet. A fortnight in one hotel costs less than the same fortnight in the Maldives.
03
Wildlife first
Yala and Wilpattu for leopards, Minneriya for elephants, Mirissa for blue whales between December and April. Four species of big draw in a country the size of Ireland, and all of it inside the dry window.
04
Ayurveda and the slow version
Two weeks of treatment at a proper ayurveda house on the west coast, with the island as the backdrop rather than the itinerary. The strongest thing Sri Lanka has that a Gulf beach holiday does not.

Common questions

The things people actually ask

Are there direct flights from Moscow to Colombo?

Yes, and the picture improves in October 2026. Aeroflot returns to Sheremetyevo–Colombo nonstop from 3 October, three times a week on a Boeing 777-300ER, with a flight time of about eight hours fifty-five minutes. SriLankan Airlines also serves Moscow from Domodedovo in roughly eight hours twenty. Outside those, the Gulf carriers connect through Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

Do Russian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

You need an ETA, but you do not pay for it. Russia was one of the original seven nationalities on Sri Lanka's free visa scheme, and since 25 May 2026 the free tourist ETA covers forty countries. It is a 30-day double-entry tourist authorisation. Free does not mean optional: you must apply online before you fly, and passports need six months' validity.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka from Russia?

December to March, which happens to be when the Russian winter holidays fall. That window is the dry season on the south and west coasts — Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle, Bentota — and the hill country is clear. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book the New Year fortnight well ahead.

How long is the flight from Moscow to Sri Lanka?

Just under nine hours nonstop from Sheremetyevo. Connecting through the Gulf typically runs twelve to fourteen hours door to door depending on the layover. The time difference is two and a half hours ahead of Moscow, which is small enough that jet lag is barely a factor.

Is Sri Lanka expensive for Russian travellers?

Less than the equivalent beach week in Thailand or the Maldives once you are on the ground. Boutique hotels on the south coast sit well below Maldives resort pricing, a car with a driver costs less than most people expect, and rice and curry at a local place is a few hundred rupees. The flight is the expensive part, not the fortnight.

Can Russian cards be used in Sri Lanka?

Plan on cash. Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard do not work abroad, and UnionPay acceptance in Sri Lanka is patchy outside the larger Colombo hotels. Bring US dollars or euros to change on arrival, and confirm payment terms with hotels in advance rather than at checkout.
