Aus Deutschland
Germany is among Sri Lanka’s largest European source markets, and one of six the island is targeting directly. Frankfurt flies nonstop; everywhere else connects through the Gulf.
The route
Frankfurt is the only German airport with a nonstop service to Colombo, operated by SriLankan Airlines. From Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf or Hamburg you connect, most commonly through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, which adds a few hours but often costs less than the nonstop.
Germany consistently ranks among the top three European source markets for Sri Lanka, alongside the UK and Russia, and it is one of the six markets named in the island’s 2026 global tourism campaign. The creative aimed at Germany leads on cultural heritage and wellness rather than beaches, which reflects how German visitors actually travel here: longer trips, more of the interior, more interest in ayurveda than in a lounger.
That plays to the island’s strengths. Eight UNESCO World Heritage sites in a country you can cross in a day, and an ayurvedic tradition that is genuinely practised rather than assembled for spa menus.
When to go
The two German holiday windows fall on opposite sides of the island’s weather. Both work, but they send you to different coasts.
Entry
Free is not the same as not required
Your country is on the list of forty nationalities that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee has gone; the authorisation has not. You apply online before departure and the airline checks it at the gate rather than immigration checking it on arrival.
The ETA gives thirty days with double entry, and your passport must be valid for six months from the date you land. The full entry guide →

December to March for the south and west coasts, which lines up with the German winter. July and August work if you go to the east coast instead, which is in its own dry season then.
German visitors typically stay longer than other European markets, and Sri Lanka rewards it. Two weeks covers the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and one coast; three weeks lets you add the east or the north.
It is one of the few places where the tradition is practised rather than adapted for spa menus. A genuine treatment programme runs two to three weeks under supervision, and several of the established houses sit on the west coast, in season from December.
Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch, the scenic part, reopened on 18 July 2026, and you reach Nanu Oya by road.
