The story

A dry-zone wilderness built for one predator

Yala is Sri Lanka's most visited national park, and for one reason above all: leopards. Block 1 holds one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere, and unlike parks where sightings are luck, here they are close to routine, a cat draped over a rock, drinking at a waterhole, moving along a track ahead of the jeep.

Beyond leopards, Yala's dry-zone scrub, lagoons and ancient tanks hold elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and over 200 bird species. Game drives run at dawn and dusk, when the heat breaks and the animals move.
