Mirissa owes its fame to an accident of geography: the continental shelf drops away just offshore, drawing blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, remarkably close to the coast. Boats leave before dawn from November to April, when seas are calm and sightings are near-daily.
Back on land, Mirissa is a proper beach town, a curved bay backed by palms, a harbour of colourful fishing boats, and a strip of cafés and guesthouses with nothing urgent on the agenda. Coconut Tree Hill, just west of the bay, is the sunset spot everyone ends up at.
