From the United Kingdom
The UK is one of Sri Lanka’s largest source markets and one of the few with a year-round direct service. From October there are two carriers on the route again.
The route
SriLankan Airlines has flown Heathrow to Colombo direct for years, an A330 taking about ten and a half hours nonstop. From October 2026 British Airways returns to the route after a long absence, flying London Gatwick to Colombo three times a week through the winter season.
Two carriers on a route usually means better fares, and the timing is pointed. BA has scheduled it as a winter-season service, which is exactly when the south and west coasts are dry and Britain is not. For a fortnight in January or February, Sri Lanka is a genuine alternative to the Caribbean at a lower cost per day on the ground.
There is also the diaspora dimension. The UK has one of the largest Sri Lankan communities outside the island, and a good share of the traffic on this route is people going home. It means the service is well established and unlikely to be seasonal in the way a purely leisure route would be.
When to go
The British holiday calendar and the Sri Lankan dry season line up unusually well. The main window is the one you most want to leave the UK for.
Entry
Free is not the same as not required
Your country is on the list of forty nationalities that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee has gone; the authorisation has not. You apply online before departure and the airline checks it at the gate rather than immigration checking it on arrival.
The ETA gives thirty days with double entry, and your passport must be valid for six months from the date you land. The full entry guide →
Shaping the trip
Common questions
Yes. SriLankan Airlines flies London Heathrow to Colombo nonstop in about ten and a half hours. British Airways returns to the route in October 2026, flying London Gatwick to Colombo three times a week for the winter season. There are also many one-stop options through the Gulf hubs.
The United Kingdom is one of forty countries whose nationals receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. It is still mandatory: you apply online before you fly, and the airline checks it at the gate.
December to March, which is both the dry season on the south and west coasts and the part of the year you most want to be out of Britain. July and August work too, but you should go east rather than south.
Flights are broadly comparable; the difference shows on the ground. Boutique hotels, food and a private driver all cost substantially less in Sri Lanka than in the Caribbean, which is why a fortnight often works out cheaper than a week elsewhere.
About ten and a half hours nonstop from Heathrow. Colombo runs four and a half hours ahead of UK winter time, so an overnight flight lands you in the morning with the day ahead of you.
Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch reopened on 18 July 2026 and you reach Nanu Oya by road. Itineraries written before last November need redrawing.
