Built by the Portuguese, fortified by the Dutch, garrisoned by the British and inherited by independent Sri Lanka, Galle Fort compresses the island's colonial history into a single walkable grid of coral-stone lanes. What saves it from becoming a museum piece is that people still live here, hanging washing from Dutch verandahs, running gem shops behind 300-year-old doors, playing cricket against the ramparts as the sun goes down. One of those houses belongs to Kumar Sangakkara, who spent years restoring it.
Most visitors give it an afternoon. Stay longer. The Fort rewards a slow pace, a coffee at a converted warehouse, a wander through the lighthouse quarter, dinner as the ramparts turn gold, then the whole town quiet again by nine.
