Four hundred kilometres from Colombo and a world of its own: Tamil, Hindu, palmyra-shaded and startlingly unlike anywhere else on the island. Not a beach destination. A cultural one.
The place
Jaffna sits at the top of Sri Lanka, on a flat limestone peninsula fringed by lagoons and shallow islands. It is Tamil-speaking and predominantly Hindu, and it feels closer to Tamil Nadu than to Kandy. The food is different, the architecture is different, the light is different: harder, whiter, thrown back off salt flats and palmyra palms.
For most of three decades it was closed to visitors. That has changed, and the peninsula is now one of the destinations Sri Lanka Tourism is pushing hardest. Come while the getting there is still the hard part, because the going is straightforward once you arrive: an overnight train, a compact grid of a city, and islands reachable by causeway and ferry.
Give it three nights. One for the city and Nallur, one for the islands, one for the peninsula's edges: Keerimalai, Point Pedro, the long causeway roads that run out over water in both directions.
