Vanuit Nederland

From Schiphol to an island the Dutch once mapped

The Netherlands sits among Sri Lanka’s top five source markets worldwide — remarkable for a country of eighteen million. Part of that is Schiphol’s connectivity. Part of it is four hundred years of shared history you can still walk through.

The route

Schiphol connects to everything

There is no nonstop Amsterdam–Colombo service, but Schiphol is one of Europe’s best-connected airports and the Gulf carriers run it hard. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Turkish Airlines all route Amsterdam to Colombo through their hubs, typically in thirteen to sixteen hours.

the Netherlands consistently ranks among the top three European source markets for Sri Lanka, alongside the UK and Russia, and it is one of the six markets named in the island’s 2026 global tourism campaign. The creative aimed at the Netherlands leads on cultural heritage and wellness rather than beaches, which reflects how Dutch visitors actually travel here: longer trips, more of the interior, more interest in ayurveda than in a lounger.

Galle Fort in particular rewards a Dutch traveller more than most. The street grid, the ramparts and the warehouse architecture are recognisably the work of the same company that built Batavia and Cape Town.

When to go

When Dutch travellers actually go

The two Dutch holiday windows fall on opposite sides of the island’s weather. Both work, but they send you to different coasts.

Dec – Mrt
Kerstvakantie
The south and west at their driest while the Netherlands is at its darkest. Book early.
Feb
Voorjaarsvakantie
Short, but the best weather of the year on the south coast and in the Cultural Triangle.
Apr – Mei
Meivakantie
Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the shoulder between monsoons. Strong for the hill country.
Jul – Aug
Zomervakantie
The south is wet; the east is dry. Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and the Perahera in Kandy.

Entry

What your passport needs

Free is not the same as not required

Your country is on the list of forty nationalities that receive the tourist ETA free of charge, in force since 25 May 2026. The fee has gone; the authorisation has not. You apply online before departure. The airline checks it at check-in, and immigration can check it again on arrival. The fee waiver was announced as a temporary scheme, so check it still applies when you book.

The ETA gives thirty days with double entry, and your passport must be valid for six months from the date you land. The full entry guide →

Shaping the trip

Four ways to spend three weeks

01
Heritage first
Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy and Galle. Six of the eight UNESCO sites in under two weeks, which is close to unmatched at this distance.
02
Ayurveda
A genuine treatment programme runs two to three weeks, not a weekend. Several of the serious houses are on the west coast, in season from December.
03
Wildlife and hiking
Yala and Udawalawe, the Knuckles range, Horton Plains and Adam’s Peak. Sri Lanka rewards walkers more than its reputation suggests.
04
The long trip
Dutch visitors stay longer than most, and three weeks lets you add the east or the north without rushing. Jaffna in particular repays the extra time.

Common questions

The things people actually ask

Are there direct flights from the Netherlands to Sri Lanka?

Frankfurt is the only Dutch airport with a nonstop service to Colombo, flown by SriLankan Airlines. From Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Hamburg you connect, most often through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul.

Do Dutch citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

the Netherlands is one of forty countries whose nationals receive the tourist ETA free of charge, a change in force since 25 May 2026. The authorisation is still required: apply online before departure, because the airline checks it at the gate.

When is the best time to travel from the Netherlands?

December to March for the south and west coasts, which lines up with the Dutch winter. July and August work if you go to the east coast instead, which is in its own dry season then.

How long should the trip be?

Dutch visitors typically stay longer than other European markets, and Sri Lanka rewards it. Two weeks covers the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and one coast; three weeks lets you add the east or the north.

Is Sri Lanka good for ayurveda?

It is one of the few places where the tradition is practised rather than adapted for spa menus. A genuine treatment programme runs two to three weeks under supervision, and several of the established houses sit on the west coast, in season from December.

Is the Kandy to Ella train running?

Not in full. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch, the scenic part, reopened on 20 June 2026, and you reach Nanu Oya by road.
