Leopard safari,
Block 1

Yala's Block 1 holds one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere in the world. Expert trackers read the dry-zone scrub for fresh signs, timing drives for the cool hours when cats are most active.

The experience

Tracking the island's most elusive predator

Unlike parks where leopard sightings are down to luck, Yala's Block 1 makes them close to routine, a cat draped over a rock, drinking at a waterhole, moving along a track ahead of the jeep. Trackers read pug marks, alarm calls and vulture activity to close in on fresh sign.

Beyond leopards, the dry-zone scrub holds elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and over 200 bird species. Drives run at dawn and dusk, when the heat breaks and animals move most.
