Where to stay

Where to stay in Ella

By The Pearl EditionElla6 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

Ella is a small town with a very big view. The hotels that matter here are the ones that make the most of it: a terrace that looks straight down the Ella Gap to the plains, a pool that seems to tip into the valley, a veranda where you can hear the train before you see it.

Where you stay in Ella changes the trip more than in most places. Pick right and you wake up to mist in the valley and walk to sunrise from your door. Pick wrong and you spend your evenings on a busy main street listening to scooters. Here is where to sleep.

The short answer

For a special stay, choose the hillsides just outside town: 98 Acres for the view, Nine Skies for privacy. For walking to dinner, choose a hotel in or near town, like EKHO Ella. Two nights is right for most trips.

98 Acres Resort & Spa

The Ella view, made into a hotel. Chalets built from reclaimed railway sleepers are scattered across a working tea estate on the slopes of Little Adam’s Peak, and the pool hangs right over the Ella Gap. The trailhead for Little Adam’s Peak is close by, which makes the sunrise walk easy. It is the place most people picture when they think of staying in Ella, and it lives up to it.

Best for: views, couples, first visits.

Nine Skies

A restored colonial tea planter’s bungalow of five bedrooms, set above the Demodara loop with the railway curling below. It comes with a butler, and you can take a room or the whole house. For a family or a group of friends, there is nowhere better in the hills to have a place to yourselves.

Best for: privacy, groups, heritage.

Pick right and you wake to mist in the valley, and walk to sunrise from your door.

EKHO Ella

The most polished hotel actually in Ella. Rooms face the mountains, some suites have spa baths, and the Nine Arch Bridge is a short drive away. Stay here if you want hotel comforts and the freedom to walk out for dinner.

Best for: convenience, modern comfort.

O2 Villas Ella

A small villa property in the hills above town, made for people who want space and a pool rather than a hotel corridor. Good for families, or for a longer, slower stay.

Best for: families, space, longer stays.

Hotel Onrock

A well-run mid-range hotel on Waterfall Road at Wemullahena, with the same kind of hill view the expensive places charge four times as much for. The sensible choice if you would rather spend on the rest of the trip.

Best for: value, the view.

How to choose

Think about what you will do. If you plan to climb Little Adam’s Peak at sunrise, stay on its slopes. If the train and the bridge are the point, stay near Demodara. If you want to wander out to a different café every evening, stay in town.

What is the best luxury hotel in Ella?

98 Acres Resort & Spa is the best-known, with chalets across a tea estate and an infinity pool over the Ella Gap. Nine Skies, a restored planter’s bungalow above the Demodara loop, is the more private choice and can be taken as a whole house.
