The story

A mountain range that still feels undiscovered

Named for its knuckle-like ridgeline, this UNESCO World Heritage forest reserve sits apart from Sri Lanka's better-known hill towns, no train line, no crowds, just cloud forest, waterfalls and trails that climb through five distinct climate zones in a single day's walk.

Villages here still farm cardamom and vegetables on terraced slopes much as they have for generations. Multi-day treks with local guides are the best way in, sleeping in simple guesthouses between ridgelines.
