The story

A fishing village that became a surfer's pilgrimage

Arugam Bay's Main Point break is consistently ranked among the world's best right-handers, drawing surfers from beginner to professional level for a season that runs reliably from May through September. Outside the water, the town has grown into a low-key beach hub without losing its village character.

Beyond the main break, half a dozen other breaks around the bay suit every level, while inland, Kumana National Park and its elephant population offer an easy day trip away from the water.
