The story

A bay built for first waves

Weligama's name means "sandy village," and its wide, gently sloping bay has made it the default classroom for anyone learning to surf in Sri Lanka. Soft, forgiving breaks roll in year-round, with surf schools lining the sand from one end of the bay to the other.

Just offshore, the last of the island's traditional stilt fishermen still perch on wooden poles at dawn, one of the most photographed sights on the south coast. Taprobane Island, a private residence on its own tidal islet, sits just off the main beach.
