Plan
Kandy to Ella by road
For years, the answer to “how do I get from Kandy to Ella?” was simple: take the train, sit on the left, and try not to drop your phone out of the door. In 2026 the answer is different, and in some ways better.
Cyclone Ditwah tore through the hill country in late 2025, and the railway between Kandy and Nanu Oya is still being rebuilt. The good news is that the most beautiful stretch, from Nanu Oya to Ella, reopened on 20 June 2026. The road between them is one of the great drives on the island. This is how to do the journey now, checked 14 October 2026.
The short answer
There is no direct train from Kandy to Ella. You have two good options. Drive all the way, about four to five hours plus stops. Or drive over the hills to Nuwara Eliya, sleep there, and take the train from Nanu Oya into Ella the next morning. If you want the train, do the second.
Two ways to do it
| By road all the way | Road, then train | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Kandy, Ramboda, Nuwara Eliya, Welimada, Ella | Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by car, train from Nanu Oya |
| Time | 4–5 hours driving, a full day with stops | 3–4 hours to Nanu Oya, about 2½ hours on the train |
| Best for | Short trips, families, flexibility | The views from the train, a night in the hills |
| The catch | Hairpins and a long day in the car | An extra night, and the train can be cancelled |
Option one: the road all the way
Kandy to Ella is about 138 km by road. Without stops, a car takes roughly four to five hours, depending on traffic and the weather on the pass. The road climbs out of Kandy through Gampola and Pussellawa, up the hairpins of the Ramboda Pass into tea country, over the top at Nuwara Eliya, then drops through Welimada and the vegetable terraces into Ella.

It is a long day if you stop, and you should stop. Leave Kandy by eight, take lunch in Nuwara Eliya, and you will be in Ella for a late-afternoon drink above the gap.
Option two: road, a night, then the train
Drive the first half, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, in about three hours with a stop or two. Spend the evening in the old hill station: Lake Gregory, a fire in the grate, a gin before dinner. In the morning, the station at Nanu Oya is about 8 km away.
The train from Nanu Oya to Ella takes about two and a half hours and runs through the highest, greenest part of the line, past Pattipola and the tea estates around Haputale and Bandarawela. A few trains a day run on this section, and the timetable is still temporary, so check the times the day before.

Reserved seats open 30 days before travel on the Sri Lanka Railways booking site and sell out early in high season. If the reserved seats are gone, unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day. Do not book a departure from Kandy: none runs to Ella yet. The train, as it stands →
If you want the train, sleep in Nuwara Eliya. The morning ride into Ella is the best two and a half hours on the island.
The stops worth making
Ramboda Falls. A tall waterfall right beside the road on the Ramboda Pass, with a viewpoint and tea shops. A good first leg-stretch.
A tea factory. Several estates along the road between Ramboda and Nuwara Eliya run factory tours and tea rooms, with tastings looking straight down the valleys. Ask your driver which one is working that day.
Nuwara Eliya. Lake Gregory, Victoria Park and the old colonial hotels. Lunch here is the natural halfway point.

Seetha Eliya and Hakgala. On the road down towards Welimada: a small temple tied to the Ramayana, and botanical gardens on the slopes of Hakgala rock.
Ravana Falls. Just below Ella on the Wellawaya road, if you arrive with time to spare. Lipton’s Seat and Diyaluma Falls are near Haputale and better as day trips from Ella than as stops on the way.
What it costs
Kandy to Ella, rough prices
| How | Price | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ride-hailing car | From about US$46 a car | 4–5 hours |
| Booked transfer | From about US$69 a car | 4–5 hours |
| Shared minivan | From about US$33 a person | 3½–5 hours |
| Public bus | A few dollars | About 6 hours |
| Private chauffeur-guide | Quoted by the day | As long as you like |
On a road like this, a good driver is worth more than the difference in price. A chauffeur-guide who knows the pass, stops where the light is good and knows which factory is working is what turns a transfer into the best day of the trip. If you hire one for several days, ask whether their room and meals are included when you stay at hotels that do not house drivers. Hiring a private driver →
Safety on the road
Drive in daylight. The Ramboda Pass has tight hairpins, and mist often comes down in the afternoon. If you get car-sick, take something before you leave Kandy, not at the first bend.
October and November bring the inter-monsoon rains to the hills, and landslips still close roads and railway lines from time to time. On 5 October 2026 a rockfall derailed a train on the incline below Kadugannawa, west of Kandy. Build in a spare half-day if you have a flight to catch, and let your driver choose the route on the day.

When will the train come back?

The government’s target is to reopen the whole line by the end of 2026 or in January or February 2027. Some of the repairs have already slipped behind schedule, so if your trip is in early 2027, plan on the road and treat the train as a bonus. We will update this page when it reopens.

Questions
Is there a train from Kandy to Ella in 2026?
Not a direct one. As of October 2026 the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya is still closed after Cyclone Ditwah. The section from Nanu Oya to Ella reopened on 20 June 2026, so you can drive to Nanu Oya and take the train from there. The government’s target for reopening the rest is the end of 2026 or early 2027.
How long is the drive from Kandy to Ella?
About 138 km and roughly four to five hours of driving on the mountain roads. With stops for tea, waterfalls and lunch in Nuwara Eliya, plan on a full day.
How much is a car from Kandy to Ella?
Ride-hailing fares start at around US$46 a car, and transfer booking sites from around US$69. Shared minivans start from about US$33 a person. A private chauffeur-guide for the day costs more but lets you stop wherever you like.

Yes, especially if you want to take the train. Sleeping in Nuwara Eliya means a relaxed morning train from nearby Nanu Oya into Ella, instead of a long drive and a tight connection on the same day.
