The story
Named for its knuckle-like ridgeline, this UNESCO World Heritage forest reserve sits apart from Sri Lanka's better-known hill towns, no train line, no crowds, just cloud forest, waterfalls and trails that climb through five distinct climate zones in a single day's walk.
It is the most practical first or last night in the country. Twenty minutes from arrivals rather than the ninety it takes to reach Colombo, with a long stretch of sand and a fish market that starts before dawn. Take one night here on the way in and the trip begins rested rather than in traffic.
