Negombo has been a fishing town since long before the airport arrived, and it still is one. The Portuguese came for cinnamon, the Dutch cut a canal to carry it south, and the Catholic church took hold so completely that the town is still known as Little Rome. The lagoon, the wide beach and the outrigger fleet are the reasons to stop; the twenty-minute transfer is only the excuse.
It is the most practical first or last night in the country. Twenty minutes from arrivals rather than the ninety it takes to reach Colombo, with a long stretch of sand and a fish market that starts before dawn. Take one night here on the way in and the trip begins rested rather than in traffic.
