The story

A harbour coveted for five centuries

Trincomalee's natural harbour is among the deepest in the world, which has made it strategically prized by Portuguese, Dutch, French and British navies in turn. Today that same calm water makes it Sri Lanka's most reliable base for diving and snorkelling, with visibility that holds up year-round.

Nearby Pigeon Island National Park protects some of the country's best reef, home to reef sharks, turtles and dense coral gardens just a short boat ride offshore. Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches offer the kind of wide, uncrowded sand the south coast lost years ago.
