The coastline reads differently from the water — bays with no road to them, reefs with nobody on them, and a deck to watch the light go from.
The experience
Sri Lanka's south coast is a string of bays, and the road only reaches some of them. A catamaran out of Mirissa or Weligama gets you to the others in under an hour — sheltered water, no beach vendors, and usually nobody else at anchor.
Charters run from a half day to a full one, and the difference matters. Half a day is a swim, a snorkel and a run along the coast. A full day gets you far enough to reach the bays that stay empty, with lunch cooked on board and time to do nothing.
In season you will often see whales or dolphins on the way out without going looking, because the same water off Mirissa that the whale boats work is the water you are crossing. The difference is that there are two of you on deck rather than forty.

November to April out of Mirissa and Weligama. May to October the east — Trincomalee and Pasikuda.
These are private charters rather than shared trips, so the boat is yours and the day is yours to shape.
You may well see them in season, but a charter is not a substitute for going out with people who track them.
There is no shade offshore and ordinary sunscreen damages coral. Bring a hat you can lose.
