The cultural triangle,
from the air

Lift off before sunrise over the tank country around Dambulla, with the lion rock coming out of the mist below you. One flight a morning, and only in season.

The experience

The one hour that reorders how you see the place

From the ground the cultural triangle reads as a series of monuments you drive between. From eight hundred feet it reads as what it is — a landscape of man-made lakes built fifteen hundred years ago, still irrigating the same paddy, with rock outcrops standing out of it like islands.

Flights leave around half past five, before the thermals build. You are up for roughly an hour, though how far you go and where you land is entirely the wind's decision — there is no steering a balloon, only choosing an altitude and taking the wind that lives there.

The season is short. Balloons fly here from around November to April, and not on any morning with weather. Operators cancel readily, which is the correct instinct, and most will move you to the next morning rather than refund.

Good to know

Before you book

Season

November to April

Outside those months nobody flies here. Even in season, mornings are cancelled for wind more often than visitors expect.

Timing

It is genuinely early

Pick-up is usually around 4:30am. Stay near Sigiriya or Dambulla rather than driving in from Kandy.

Booking

Book the first morning

Give yourself a spare day. If your only morning is weathered out, there is no second chance.

What to bring

A layer

It is cold at altitude and warm on landing. Closed shoes for the field you come down in.
