Wetland · Negombo
Sri Lanka's largest coastal wetland sits directly behind Negombo: mangrove channels, water monitors, kingfishers and around a hundred and ninety bird species, twenty minutes from the airport.
The experience
Muthurajawela means the swamp of royal treasure, and it runs from the edge of Negombo lagoon down toward Colombo. It is the largest saline coastal peatland in the country, and it survives because building on it has always been difficult. The result is a wilderness sitting against the airport road.
Boats leave from the visitor centre and work the mangrove channels into the lagoon. What you see depends on the hour: water monitors and kingfishers most of the day, and far more birds early and late. It is a calm two hours, and it is the one genuinely wild thing you can do on an arrival or departure day.
