Fishing · Negombo
Negombo's fleet lands its catch around five in the morning. By eight the beach is empty again. This is the hour the town actually runs on.
The experience
The oruwa is a log canoe with an outrigger and a single sail, and Negombo still runs a fleet of them. They go out at night and come back in the dark before dawn, and the beach at Duwa fills with sorted fish, ice and shouting before most hotels have started breakfast.
There is no ticket and no tour. You walk on. The auction is conducted at speed and in Sinhala, buyers from Colombo restaurants standing alongside women buying a single fish for lunch. By eight the sand is swept, the boats are drawn up, and there is nothing to see until tomorrow.
