and almost nobody

The experience

The range most itineraries drive straight past

The Knuckles get their English name from a colonial surveyor who thought the peaks looked like a clenched fist. The Sinhala name, Dumbara Kanduvetiya, means the mist-laden mountain range, which is the more useful description — this is cloud forest, and the cloud is the point.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a conservation area, which means guides are required on most routes and permits are checked. That is not bureaucracy for its own sake: the trails are unmarked, the weather turns in minutes, and the range has swallowed people who went in confident.

Trekking runs from a half day to three days with village stays. Meemure, on the far side, had no road until the 1990s and still feels like it. Riverston and Mini World's End are the easier options, and both give you the drop and the cloud without a night out.

What to expect

What the range holds

Viewpoint
Mini World's End
A sheer drop through cloud, reached on an easy walk. Go early or see nothing but white.

Village
Meemure
No road until the nineties. Homestays, a river to swim in, and no phone signal to speak of.

Forest
Riverston
Montane forest and grassland at fifteen hundred metres, and the cold that surprises everyone.

Good to know

Before you book

Guides

Not optional

Trails are unmarked and the conservation area requires a licensed guide on most routes. Arrange through your hotel.

Season

January to April

The rest of the year the cloud sits on the range and the leeches are relentless. They are there in season too.

Bring

Layers and socks

It is genuinely cold at altitude and wet underfoot most days. Leech socks are worth the small indignity.

Leeches

They are a fact

Not dangerous, just persistent. Leech socks are sold locally and worth the small indignity.
