When the south blows out, the east turns to glass. Six months later they trade back. Few coastlines are this obliging.
The world
Two monsoons cross this island on opposite schedules, which is why its water works all year. November to April the south and west lie calm — whales off Mirissa, a clean right at Weligama, a boat out of the harbour before the wind gets up. May to October the east takes over: Pigeon Island clears, Arugam Bay fires, and the Kalpitiya wind arrives on time every afternoon.
So there is no bad month here. There is only a right side of the island, and it moves.
Blue whale watching
The largest animal that has ever lived, forty minutes off a fishing harbour. Boats leave before six, and the sea is calmest early.
