The world

An island that is unusually easy with children

Distances are short, the food is mild if you ask, and the wildlife is close enough to see without a long lens. Sri Lanka asks less of a family than most long-haul destinations: a leopard drive is two hours rather than two days, and the beach is never far from the jungle.

These are the ones where a child is genuinely occupied rather than tolerated. Turtles at Rekawa in the dark, hundreds of elephants at a single reservoir, grade three rapids, and a kitchen where they are handed something to do.
