A peninsula on the northwest coast where the wind arrives on schedule for half the year, with a shallow lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other.
The experience
Kalpitiya is a spit of land two and a half hours north of Negombo, with the Puttalam lagoon on its inland side and the Indian Ocean on the other. The lagoon is shallow, flat and wide, which makes it close to ideal for learning; the ocean side gives you swell once you can use it.
The wind runs two seasons — roughly May to October, and again December to March — and in the main season it is remarkably consistent, filling in through the morning and holding into the evening.
What it does not have is crowds. There are kite schools and a handful of camps, and on most days there is more water than there are people using it. That is the trade for a fairly basic strip of coast with not much else on it.

May to October is the main one and the more reliable. December to March is a second, shorter season.
A course to independent riding is usually three to five days. One afternoon will not do it.
Accommodation is simple and mostly kite-focused. Come for the wind rather than the room.
There is very little shelter on the peninsula. Long sleeves in the water beat sunscreen.
