Seasons
Sri Lanka in November
The first whale boats of the season leave Mirissa harbour in the dark. An hour out, someone shouts, and a long grey back rolls through the swell, then the tail lifts clear of the water and slides under. It is the start of the south coast’s winter, and the island’s best months are beginning.
November is the turning point. The south and west coasts come into season, the surf switches on at Weligama and Hiriketiya, and the whales are back. Come in the second half of the month and you get the start of the season without December’s prices.
The short answer
Go south and west, ideally from mid-November. The coast from Galle to Tangalle is improving week by week, the whales are off Mirissa, and Yala is green after the rains. Avoid the east coast and the north late in the month, when the north-east monsoon arrives.
