Seasons

Sri Lanka in December

By The Pearl EditionSouth and west6 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

December is the month Sri Lanka fills up, and for good reason. It is also the month when where you go matters more than when.

The south-west monsoon has packed up and gone. The south coast turns blue and still, and the whale boats are back out of Mirissa. On the other side of the island, the north-east monsoon is doing the opposite.

Get the coast right and December is the best month of the year. Get it wrong and you will spend the holiday watching rain on the east coast, wondering what the fuss was about.

The short answer

Go south and west. The coast from Colombo down to Tangalle is in its peak season: dry, warm, and calm enough to swim. The hill country is cool and mostly clear. The east coast and the north are in their monsoon, so save Trincomalee and Arugam Bay for the middle of the year.

And book early. Christmas and New Year are the most sought-after fortnight on the island, and the best small hotels go first.

December, at a glance

RegionWeatherGo?
South coastDry, sunny, around 30°C. Calm sea.Yes. Peak season.
West coastDry south of Colombo. Christmas in Negombo.Yes.
Hill countryCool, green, chilly evenings. Some showers.Yes. Mornings are best.
Cultural triangleChangeable, with showers.Yes, with a loose plan.
East coast and northMonsoon. Heavy rain, rough sea.Save it for June.

The south coast, at its best

This is the stretch to build a December trip around. Galle Fort is at its most walkable, with the ramparts dry for sunset. Weligama and Ahangama have the gentle waves that suit a first surf lesson. Tangalle is quieter, with long empty beaches and some of the island's best small hotels set back from the sand.

The whales are back, too. The blue whale season off Mirissa runs from December to April, with the boats going out at dawn to around forty minutes offshore. Go with a responsible operator, go early, and take something for the swell. Whale watching in Mirissa →

The hill country, and the train

The tea country is at its loveliest just after the rains. Ella, Haputale and Nuwara Eliya are cool and green, and the mornings are clear. You will want a jumper after dark.

A word on the famous train. Cyclone Ditwah badly damaged the hill-country railway in November 2025. The most scenic stretch, from Nanu Oya to Ella, is running again. The line from Kandy to Nanu Oya is still under repair, with reopening expected towards the end of 2026.

For now, the usual plan is to drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya and take the train from there. Check the latest before you book. The Kandy–Ella train, as it actually stands →

Adam's Peak opens

December brings one of the island's great rituals. The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season begins on Unduvap Poya, which falls on 23 December in 2026, and runs until the Vesak full moon in May.

Pilgrims climb through the night by the light of the lamps strung along the path, to reach the summit for sunrise. It is a long climb, and it gets very crowded on poya days and long weekends. Go on a weekday if you can. Climbing Adam's Peak →

A note on poya days: every full moon is a public holiday. Many shops close, bars and liquor shops shut, and many hotels will not serve alcohol in public areas, though some will bring it to your room. Plan the celebratory dinner for another night.

Christmas and New Year

Sri Lanka keeps Christmas properly, especially along the Catholic west coast. Negombo is lit up for weeks, with midnight mass and carols from its churches all the way up to Chilaw.

New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year for hotels. The best small properties sell out months ahead, and many set minimum stays over the holidays. If your dates are fixed, book now. Christmas and New Year in Sri Lanka →

Wildlife in December

Yala is open, and the leopards do not mind the season. December can be wet in the park, though, so morning drives are the better bet. The south-coast whales are the month's real wildlife highlight. The great elephant gathering at Minneriya belongs to the dry season, so save that one for July to September.

Getting in

Most visitors still need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly, but since 25 May 2026 it has been free for nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, Australia, Germany, France, China and India. It is quick to apply for online. The fee waiver was announced as a temporary scheme, so check it still applies when you book. Visa and entry →

What to pack

Light linen and cotton for the coast, a warm layer for the hills, and a rain jacket for the in-between days. Shoes you can slip off at temples, and something to cover shoulders and knees. Reef-safe sunscreen. For Adam's Peak, a head torch and a jacket: the summit is cold at dawn.

Questions

Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes, for the south and west coasts and the hill country. The south-west monsoon has ended, so Galle, Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle are dry and warm. The east coast and the north are in the north-east monsoon, so save Trincomalee and Arugam Bay for May to September.

Is the Kandy to Ella train running in December 2026?

Partly. After Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025, the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella section is running again, but the Kandy to Nanu Oya section is still under repair, with reopening expected between the end of 2026 and early 2027. Most travellers drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya and take the train from there. Check the latest before booking.

When does the Adam's Peak season start?

The pilgrimage season begins on Unduvap Poya, which falls on 23 December in 2026, and runs until the Vesak full moon in May.

Can you see whales in Sri Lanka in December?

Yes. The blue whale season off Mirissa on the south coast runs from December to April, with boats going out at dawn.
