Seasons
Sri Lanka in May
On the night of Vesak, Colombo glows. Paper lanterns hang from every balcony, giant illuminated panels tell the stories of the Buddha’s lives, and strangers hand you free tea, rice and curry from roadside stalls built for the occasion. It is the gentlest festival you will ever see.
May is also the month the weather turns. The south-west monsoon arrives, the south coast empties, and the east coast takes over. Choose your side of the island and May is quiet, green and very good value.
The short answer
Go east and inland. Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay are coming into their season, the cultural triangle is dry, and Jaffna is hot and clear. Skip swimming on the south and west coasts, where the sea turns rough. Time a night in Colombo for Vesak.
The island this month, region by region

| East coast | Dry, calm and clear. Season opens. | Yes. The place to be. |
| North | Hot and dry. | Yes. |
Vesak
Vesak Poya falls on 19 May in 2027 and marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha. The streets of Colombo, especially around Gangaramaya temple and Beira Lake, are hung with lanterns and lit-up pandals, and the dansal stalls give out free food and drink to anyone passing. Go out after dark and walk.
Vesak also closes the Adam’s Peak pilgrim season. If you want to climb it lit and busy, do it before the full moon. Climbing Adam’s Peak →

The east coast’s turn
As the monsoon wets the south-west, the east dries out. Trincomalee and Nilaveli have calm, clear water, Pasikudah’s shallow bay is perfect for swimming, and Arugam Bay’s surf season begins. Boats out of Trincomalee start looking for whales around now. Arugam Bay → Trincomalee →

Good value, and quiet
May is low season on the south and west coasts, and many hotels there drop their rates. The cultural triangle is quiet before the summer crowds. If you are flexible about beaches, this is one of the best-value months of the year.

Questions
Is May a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you go to the right side of the island. The south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts, but the east coast, the cultural triangle and the north are dry, and it is one of the cheapest months to travel.
When is Vesak in 2027?
Vesak Poya falls on Wednesday 19 May 2027. Colombo and towns across the island are decorated with lanterns and pandals, and free food stalls called dansal line the streets.
Can you climb Adam’s Peak in May?
Only until Vesak. The pilgrim season ends at the Vesak full moon, 19 May in 2027. After that the path is unlit, the summit is often in cloud, and a guide is recommended.
