Seasons

Sri Lanka in June

By The Pearl EditionEast and north6 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

On the night of Poson, the steps up Mihintale are a river of white. Pilgrims climb in their thousands to the hill where, the story goes, Buddhism first came to the island, and the whole of the old capital at Anuradhapura is lit up around them.

June is the quietest month for visitors, and one of the best kept secrets of the calendar. The east coast is at its very best, the ruins of the dry zone are hot and empty, and prices are the lowest of the year.

The short answer

Go east and north. Arugam Bay is in peak surf season, Trincomalee and Pasikudah have calm, clear water, and Jaffna and the cultural triangle are dry. Leave the south and west coasts for the winter.

Poson, at Mihintale

Poson Poya falls on 18 June in 2027. It marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and Mihintale, near Anuradhapura, is its heart. The crowds are enormous and good-natured, and the hill is lit through the night. It is a long weekend, so if you want to stay in Anuradhapura, book well ahead.

The east coast at its best

June is the month for Arugam Bay: consistent swell, offshore mornings, and the long right-hander at Main Point at its best. Further north, Trincomalee and Nilaveli have flat, clear water and the reef at Pigeon Island. Surfing in Sri Lanka →

The north, while it is dry

Jaffna is hot, dry and wonderfully different, with Hindu temples, a Dutch fort and its own cooking. The night train from Colombo makes the journey part of the trip. Jaffna →
