Seasons
Sri Lanka in September
Late in the afternoon at Minneriya, the elephants come out of the forest in families, a few at first and then dozens, then hundreds, spreading out across the grass by the water. The calves stay close. Somewhere a bull trumpets, and the whole herd looks up.
September is when the gathering is at its largest, the summer crowds have gone home, and the east coast still has a few good weeks. It is a quieter, cheaper, very rewarding month, if you plan around Yala.
The short answer
Go to the dry zone for the elephants and the ruins, and the east coast for a final beach. Check Yala before you plan a safari there: its main blocks usually close for several weeks from September. Shoulder prices make it good value.

| North | Hot and dry. | Yes. |
The gathering at its largest
September is the month for Minneriya. As the reservoir shrinks, hundreds of elephants come to feed on the grass at its edge, and evening jeep safaris sit among them. Kaudulla, nearby, takes over as the rains return in October. The elephant gathering →

Yala’s closure
Each year, at the height of the drought, Yala’s busiest blocks close for several weeks. In 2026 Blocks 1 and 2 were closed from 14 September to 15 October. The 2027 dates will be announced nearer the time. Udawalawe, Bundala and the eastern blocks are good alternatives, and Udawalawe is the better park for elephants anyway. The Yala leopard safari →
The east coast’s last weeks
Arugam Bay is quieter but still good for surf, and the beaches around Trincomalee and Pasikudah are calm. Turtles nest on the south coast too: the olive ridley peak runs from September to November.
