Seasons
Sri Lanka in October
The storms in October come in the late afternoon. The sky turns the colour of slate, the rain arrives all at once, loud on the roof, and an hour later it is gone, leaving the whole island steaming and green and smelling of wet earth.
October is the second inter-monsoon, the wettest month for much of the country. It is not a beach month. But for a traveller who likes early starts, empty sites and low prices, it has a lot going for it.
The short answer
Expect heavy afternoon storms almost everywhere, and plan your sightseeing for the mornings. The cultural triangle and the south coast are the best bets; the south coast’s season begins late in the month. Avoid long hill treks and evening drives.
The island this month, region by region
| Region | Weather | Go? |
|---|---|---|
| South and west coasts | Showery, improving late month. | Late October. |
| Hill country | Wet. Landslide risk. | Not for treks. |
| Cultural triangle | Rains return; mornings clear. | Yes, mornings. |
| East coast | Rain increasing; seas changeable. | Early October only. |
| North | Rain starting. | Early October. |
Mornings, not afternoons
The rhythm of October is simple. Mornings are often bright and clear; the storms build after lunch. So climb Sigiriya at opening time, walk Polonnaruwa before the heat, and spend the afternoons on a veranda watching the rain come in.
An hour later it is gone, leaving the whole island steaming and green.
Elephants, and Yala’s return
As the rains come back to the dry zone, the herds move from Minneriya to Kaudulla nearby. Yala’s main blocks usually reopen in mid to late October after the dry-season closure, green and quiet.

A note on the weather in 2026
A strong El Niño is expected to peak between October and December 2026. Forecasters have suggested this could mean short, intense downpours during the inter-monsoon. Build some slack into your plans and check local forecasts as you go.
