Seasons

Sri Lanka in July

By The Pearl EditionEast and dry zone6 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

At Kataragama, deep in the south-east, the festival builds for two weeks. Pilgrims arrive on foot from as far as Jaffna, the drums go on long into the night, and on the last evenings devotees walk across beds of glowing coals.

July is when the island gets busy again. Summer holidays in Europe and the Gulf bring the second peak of the year, the herds begin to gather at Minneriya, and the east coast is in full swing. It is a month for the dry side of the island, and for booking ahead.

The short answer

Go east and inland: Arugam Bay or Trincomalee for the beach, Sigiriya and Minneriya for the ruins and the elephants, Kalpitiya for the wind. The south-west monsoon continues, though it often eases on the south coast. Book early; it is the start of the summer peak.

The gathering begins

As the dry season bites, the elephants of the north-central plains come to the shrinking reservoir at Minneriya to feed on the fresh grass. In July the numbers start to build, and by August and September they are among the largest gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere. The elephant gathering →

Festivals: Kataragama and the Vel

The Kataragama festival is timed to end on the Esala full moon, 18 July in 2027. In 2026 it ran from 15 to 30 July, with fire-walking near the end. In Colombo, the Vel festival carries a silver chariot along Galle Road in late July or early August. Exact 2027 dates are announced closer to the time.

Wind, waves and fruit

Arugam Bay is in peak surf season, and Kalpitiya, on the west coast, has its kitesurfing winds. It is also a good month for roadside fruit: stop when your driver does.
