Seasons
Sri Lanka in August
The drums come first, then the whip-crackers, then the fire. For ten nights in Kandy, hundreds of dancers, drummers and torch-bearers, and dozens of elephants in glittering cloth, process through the streets around the Temple of the Tooth. On the last night, the tusker carrying the relic casket passes, and the whole city falls silent.
August is the island’s festival month. Kandy has its Perahera, Jaffna has its great temple festival at Nallur, and the elephants at Minneriya reach their peak. It is busy, it is expensive in the right places, and it is unforgettable.
The short answer
Build August around Kandy for the Perahera, then go east for the beach and inland for the elephants. Book Kandy months ahead. The south and west coasts are in the monsoon, so save them for winter.

The Esala Perahera, Kandy
The dates are fixed by the Temple of the Tooth on auspicious times and announced each summer. In 2026 the Perahera ran from 18 to 28 August, with the final great procession on the Nikini full moon. In 2027 that full moon falls on 16 August, so the processions are likely to be in the first half of the month. Wait for the official dates before you book.

Nallur, Jaffna
In Jaffna, the 25-day festival at the Nallur Kandaswamy temple builds to the day of the great chariot, usually in late August. It is one of the most spectacular Hindu festivals in Asia. Men remove their shirts to enter the temple. Exact 2027 dates are announced closer to the time.

Elephants and beaches
The gathering at Minneriya is near its peak, with hundreds of elephants on the shores of the reservoir. Pair it with Sigiriya. Then go east to Arugam Bay, Pasikudah or Trincomalee for a dry beach at the end.
