Seasons
Sri Lanka in January, February and March
If you could choose only three months to see Sri Lanka, these would be the ones. The rains have gone from almost everywhere, the hills are clear, the sea on the south coast is flat and warm, and the island is at its most generous.
The first quarter of the year is peak season for a reason. The famous sights are at their best, the whales are off the south coast, and the full moons of January and February bring some of the most beautiful processions of the year.
The three months are not the same, though. This is how they differ, and where to be in each.
The short answer
January, February and March are the best months for the south and west coasts, the hill country and the cultural triangle. February is usually the driest of all. January is greener, after the rains. March is hotter, and the east coast begins to wake up towards the end of it.
Early 2027, at a glance
| Month | Weather | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| January | Dry in the south, west and hills. Green after the rains. | The hills, the coast, Adam’s Peak. |
| February | Usually the driest month of the year. | Everything. The peak of the peak. |
| March | Hot and humid. Storms by late March. | Whales, beaches, the first of the east. |
January: the island, washed clean
January is the month the island looks its best. The north-east monsoon has blown itself out over most of the country, and everything it watered is still green. The paddy fields of the cultural triangle are brilliant with young rice, and the tea estates are lush and clear.
The hill country is at its loveliest now. Mornings in Ella and Nuwara Eliya are cold and bright, and by mid-morning the mist has burned off the valleys. It is the start of the best season for Horton Plains, where the view from World’s End depends entirely on getting there before the cloud does.

January is also the best month to climb Adam’s Peak. The pilgrim season opened at the end of December, the skies are clearer than they will be in spring, and once the holidays are over, the weekday crowds thin. Climbing Adam’s Peak →
Two dates to know. Thai Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival, falls on 15 January in 2027, celebrated in Tamil homes from Jaffna to the hill country with pots of sweet rice boiled over in thanks. Duruthu Poya falls on 22 January, and the great temple at Kelaniya, just outside Colombo, marks it with its annual procession of drummers, dancers and elephants.
January is the month the island looks its best: the rains have gone, and everything they watered is still green.
February: the peak of the peak
February is usually the driest month of the year across most of Sri Lanka, and it shows. The south coast is hot, still and blue. The cultural triangle is dry enough to climb Sigiriya at any hour, though dawn is still best. It is the month when everything simply works.

On 4 February the country celebrates Independence Day, with a parade in Colombo and roads closed around it. Plan to be out of the city that morning, or on the edges of it.
Then comes Navam Poya, on 20 February. Around it, Gangaramaya temple in Colombo holds the Navam Perahera, one of the island’s great processions, with drummers, dancers, fire-bearers and elephants winding past Beira Lake after dark. If you have only one chance to see a perahera, and you are not here for the Esala Perahera in Kandy in summer, this is it.

February is also one of the busiest months of the season. The best small hotels on the south coast and in the hills fill up early, so this is the month that rewards booking ahead.
March: hot days, and the turning of the year
March is still a fine month to travel, especially in the first half. The south coast is in season, the sea is calm, and the whales are still off Mirissa. The blue whale season there runs from December to April. Whale watching in Mirissa →

It gets hot, though. Days on the coast climb into the low thirties, and the humidity rises as the month goes on. Towards the end of March, the inter-monsoon begins to bring afternoon storms: short, heavy and dramatic, usually followed by a clear evening. Plan sightseeing for the mornings.
The east coast begins to turn at the same time. Trincomalee and the beaches around it come into season in spring, and whale-watching boats there begin looking for blue whales from around March. It is too early for Arugam Bay’s surf, which belongs to the summer.
March 2027 is busy on the calendar. Mahasivarathri falls on 6 March, Eid ul-Fitr on 10 March (subject to the moon), at the end of Ramadan, and Medin Poya on 22 March. Good Friday is on 26 March, and Easter is kept faithfully on the Catholic west coast, as Christmas is.
Full moons, and dry days
Every full moon is a poya day, a Buddhist holiday on which bars and liquor shops close and meat is not sold. Many hotels will not serve alcohol in public areas, though some will bring it to your room. In early 2027 they fall on 22 January, 20 February and 22 March. They are beautiful days to visit temples, when families come in white with offerings of flowers. Just plan the celebratory dinner for another night.

The train, in the new year
Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country railway badly in November 2025. The scenic stretch from Nanu Oya to Ella reopened on 20 June 2026, and repairs on the line towards Kandy are expected to finish around the end of 2026 or early in 2027.
If the work finishes on time, the full journey from Kandy may be possible again in early 2027. If not, the plan is the same as now: drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya and take the train from there. Tickets open thirty days before travel and sell out fast in peak season. The Kandy–Ella train, as it stands →
