Sri Lanka in April

In April the whole country goes home. Buses are packed to the roof, the roads out of Colombo fill, and on the morning of the New Year, at an auspicious minute set by astrologers, families across the island light the hearth and boil a pot of milk until it spills over, for luck.

It is the hottest month, and the most festive. The south coast is in its last good weeks, the east is just waking up, and the hill town of Nuwara Eliya has its season. Come knowing what closes, and April is a very good month.

The short answer

Go to the south coast early in the month, the hill country for the April season, and the east coast from late in the month. Avoid long journeys around 13–14 April, when the country stops for New Year. Expect heat and short afternoon storms everywhere.

New Year, and what it means for you

Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls on 13 and 14 April in 2027, a Tuesday and Wednesday. It is the biggest family holiday of the year. Many shops, restaurants and businesses close for a few days, and the trains and buses are full in both directions.

For a traveller, it is a lovely time to be here, as long as you are not trying to get anywhere. Stay put for those days, eat the sweets, and watch the games in the villages. A private driver makes the rest of the month easy.

The hill country’s season

April is Nuwara Eliya’s month. The old hill station fills with visitors from Colombo escaping the heat, with races, flower shows and a festival atmosphere. It is booked solid in mid-April, so reserve early, or come at the start or end of the month.

Adam’s Peak is still in its pilgrim season until Vesak in May, and April mornings can still give a clear sunrise from the summit.

The coasts change over

The south coast is in its final weeks: still bright in the mornings, with the swell building late in the month. The whales are finishing off Mirissa. On the other side of the island, the east coast is coming into season, and Arugam Bay’s surf starts to turn on in late April.

Dates for April 2027

Every full moon is a poya day, a public holiday when bars and liquor shops close and many hotels will not serve alcohol in public areas. Plan the celebratory dinner for another night.
