Getting here
Direct flights to Sri Lanka
Anton Chekhov got here on a steamer. So did Hermann Hesse, Mark Twain and a young Pablo Neruda. Anthony Bourdain came twice, and Margot Robbie and Hrithik Roshan have been since. Today you can sit down in London, Frankfurt, Zurich or Melbourne, watch three films, and wake up over the Indian Ocean. Here is every nonstop route to Sri Lanka for the 2026 season, and the famous people who took the long way round before you.
The short version. Nonstop to Colombo from London (Heathrow, and Gatwick from 23 October), Frankfurt, Zurich (from 26 October), Melbourne and Sydney, and from most of Asia in under six hours. From everywhere else, one stop through a hub.
From London: about ten and a half hours
SriLankan Airlines flies Heathrow to Colombo nonstop, and this winter it gets company. British Airways returns to the island on 23 October 2026 with a Gatwick service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It leaves at half past five in the evening and lands at nine the next morning, which is about as civilised as a long-haul flight gets. It runs through the winter season, exactly when the south and west coasts are dry and London is not.

The British have been making this trip for a long time. Leonard Woolf spent 1904 to 1911 here as a colonial officer, ran the district around Hambantota, and went home to write The Village in the Jungle before he ever married Virginia. Arthur C. Clarke moved to Colombo in 1956, spent his days diving off Trincomalee, and never really left; he lived here until his death in 2008. And in 1953 Vivien Leigh arrived to film Elephant Walk, fell ill during the shoot and was replaced by Elizabeth Taylor. Look closely at the long shots and it is still Leigh in the frame. Gillian Anderson, too, has owned a seven-acre estate at Pasyala, inland from the airport.

From Frankfurt: about ten hours
Frankfurt is the only German airport with a nonstop to Colombo, flown by SriLankan Airlines three times a week. Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Düsseldorf connect once, usually through the Gulf or Istanbul.

Hermann Hesse made this journey in 1911, by ship, and stopped in Ceylon twice: once in September on his way east, and again for two weeks in November on the way home. He walked Colombo and Kandy, never set foot in India, and those two weeks shaped the East he wrote about in Siddhartha a decade later. A whole generation of backpackers followed the book here. You can do it in one night and a film.

From Zurich: about ten hours, in winter
Edelweiss, the Swiss leisure airline, flies Zurich to Colombo seasonally and is adding a third weekly flight this winter. The first departure of the season is 26 October 2026, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the route runs into May 2027. It is a genuine winter-sun shuttle: evening out of Zurich, breakfast in the tropics.

Hesse, as it happens, later became a Swiss citizen. He would have approved of the timetable.
From Melbourne and Sydney: about ten to eleven hours
This is the route that changed most this year. Since 25 August 2026 Jetstar has flown Melbourne to Colombo nonstop on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, Australia's first low-cost nonstop to the island, and SriLankan already flew direct from both Melbourne and Sydney. For a short trip that is the difference between a day lost each way and none.

Australians have form here. Mark Twain sailed from Australia to Colombo in 1896 on his round-the-world lecture tour and wrote about the island in Following the Equator. And in March 2004 Shane Warne took his five hundredth Test wicket at Galle, a ground you can watch from the fort ramparts for free. Margot Robbie has holidayed here too, which is about as good an endorsement as a ten-hour flight can get.

From Asia: mostly under six hours
Asia is where Sri Lanka is closest. Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are under four hours, Singapore a little more, China around five and a half, and Seoul and Tokyo roughly eight and a half to nine and a half. SriLankan, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia and others cover the region, which makes a long weekend from Singapore entirely reasonable. We should know; it is our commute.

In 1929 Pablo Neruda arrived as Chile’s consul in Colombo, rented a house by the sea in Wellawatte and lived there with a pet mongoose he called Kiria. He was in his twenties, lonely, and writing some of his best early poems. The mongoose, by his account, followed him everywhere.
The modern version arrives rather faster. In August 2025 Hrithik Roshan flew in from Mumbai, about two hours away, to open City of Dreams, the vast new resort on the Colombo waterfront, after Shah Rukh Khan pulled out a fortnight before. Colombo has not stopped talking about it since.
From everywhere else: one stop
Paris, Amsterdam, New York and most of Europe and North America connect once. The usual hubs are Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul to the west, and Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to the east. In past winters there have also been seasonal nonstops from Warsaw and Moscow, so if you are flying from Poland or Russia it is worth checking this season’s timetable before you book a connection.
Anthony Bourdain came from New York, twice: in 2009 for No Reservations and again in 2017 for Parts Unknown. The first time he ate his way around Colombo, from lamprais at the Dutch Burgher Union to kottu roti late at night at Hotel De Pilawoos, which is still the correct way to end an evening in the capital.

Chekhov, for the record, came from the other direction. In November 1890, on the way home from the penal colony on Sakhalin, his ship put in at Colombo. After Siberia he found the island unbearably beautiful, and he wrote home that he had been to paradise.
Land well
Most flights from Europe arrive in the morning. The airport is twenty minutes from Negombo and an hour or more from Colombo through traffic, so after a long flight take the twenty minutes, sleep, and start the trip properly the next day. Our 12-day Sri Lanka itinerary begins exactly there.

Where you go first depends on the month: the south and west from December to March, the east from April to September. If you would rather not work that out yourself, tell us how you travel and we will build the route around the flight you land on.
