Sri Lanka in seven days

By The Pearl EditionNegombo to Ella7 min readChecked 14 Oct 2026

Meet Daniel. He works in Frankfurt, he has one week, and he has already told everyone at the office that he is doing “the train”.

He has also moved three meetings to make this happen, which means Daniel cannot afford to waste a day. Unfortunately, Daniel’s first draft includes Sigiriya, Kandy, the train, Yala, Mirissa, Galle and “maybe Jaffna?”. In seven days. In a country where a hundred and fifty kilometres takes four hours.

Daniel isn’t real. But every week somebody sends us Daniel’s spreadsheet. So here is what we would tell him: a week buys you two regions done properly. The Cultural Triangle and the hill country, with the train in the middle. The beach, sadly, is a different week. Unless you swap, which we explain below.

Day by day

Nights: Negombo 1 · Sigiriya 2 · Kandy 1 · Nuwara Eliya 1 · Ella 1

  1. Day 01
Outrigger canoe under sail on Negombo lagoon

    Negombo

    Land. Sleep. That’s it.

    Airport → Negombo · 20 min

    • AfternoonCheck in, swim, and resist the urge to start sightseeing.
    • SunsetA beer on the beach while the fishing boats come in.

Stay · NegomboWith seven days, a tired first day costs you two. Rest now.

  2. Day 02
    Sigiriya rock at sunrise

    Dambulla · Sigiriya

    Straight to the good bit

    Negombo → Sigiriya · about 4 hr

    • MiddayDambulla’s cave temples on the way. Shoulders and knees covered.
    • EveningDinner, early night. The rock opens at seven.

Stay · Sigiriya area, 2 nightsTwo nights here, not one. Everything in the Triangle is an easy day out.

  3. Day 03
    Sigiriya seen from Pidurangala

    Sigiriya

The rock, then the view of it

    No long drives today

    • 7:00Climb Sigiriya before the heat. Two to three hours.
    • AfternoonA jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla. July to September is the elephant gathering.
    • 16:30Or Pidurangala for sunset, if the elephants are elsewhere.

Stay · Sigiriya areaTake water up. There is none at the top.

  4. Day 04
The Temple of the Tooth at dusk

    Kandy

    Drums at dusk

    Sigiriya → Kandy · 2½–3 hr

    • AfternoonA walk round Kandy Lake.
    • EveningThe Temple of the Tooth during the evening puja.

Stay · KandyOne night is enough on a short trip. Use the evening, not the afternoon.

  5. Day 05
Tea fields at Pedro Estate, Nuwara Eliya

    The tea country

    Up into the clouds

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya by road · 2½–3 hr

    • MiddayRamboda falls and a working tea factory on the way up.
    • EveningNuwara Eliya. Pack a jumper; you will laugh, then need it.

Stay · Nuwara EliyaThe Kandy–Nanu Oya railway is still closed, so this leg is by road for now.

  6. Day 06
A blue train on the Nine Arch Bridge

    Nanu Oya → Ella

The train you told everyone about

Train from Nanu Oya · about 9:00, around 2½ hr

    • MorningAmbewela, Haputale and the long ridge runs down into Ella.
    • AfternoonThe Nine Arch Bridge. Wait for a train; it is worth it.

Stay · EllaBook reserved seats about 30 days ahead, and check the timetable the week before.

  7. Day 07
Sunrise from Little Adam’s Peak, Ella

    Ella → airport

One sunrise, then the long way home

Ella → airport by road · 6–7 hr

    • DawnLittle Adam’s Peak, about forty minutes up. The last view of the trip, and the best.
    • 9:00Leave for the airport. Book an evening or overnight flight.

It is a long last drive. That is the price of ending in the hills; the beach swap below avoids it.

Rather have a beach than the train?

Swap the last three days. After Kandy, head south by expressway to Galle or Mirissa, about four hours, and spend two nights on the coast. The drive to the airport is then only two and a half hours, instead of six or seven from Ella. You lose the train. You gain a sunset on the Galle ramparts. It is a fair trade, and it is your week.

What Daniel crossed off

Yala, which needs a night nearby to be worth it. Mirissa, which is a different coast. And Jaffna, which, with respect to Daniel’s colleague, is a trip of its own. Got a few more days? Our 10-day itinerary adds the south coast without rushing anything.

Two regions in a week, done properly. The rest is a reason to come back.

Seven days, two regions, one very famous train. Daniel will be insufferable about it at the office. He will have earned it.
