Good to know

Travel information

🛬
Arrival airport

Almost all flights land at Bandaranaike International (CMB), about 35 km north of Colombo and close to Negombo's beaches — handy for a first or last island night.

🕑
Best time to book

Fares are lowest 6–8 weeks ahead from long-haul cities and 2–3 weeks from the Gulf and Asia. December–March peak season sells out earliest — book early.

🚗
Airport transfers

Pre-booked private cars and metered airport taxis are inexpensive; most hotels arrange pickups. Tuk-tuks and ride apps cover shorter onward hops.

🧳
On the ground

Buy a local SIM in the arrivals hall for cheap data, withdraw rupees at the airport ATMs, and remember you'll need an approved ETA before you fly.

Visa + travel information

Sri Lanka ETA

Most visitors arrive on a simple online ETA

Sri Lanka welcomes tourists with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — applied for online before you fly. It currently covers a 30-day tourist stay, extendable in-country for longer trips, and dozens of nationalities enjoy fee-free or visa-free entry under the latest scheme. Approval usually lands within 24–72 hours, so apply once your flights are booked.

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date
  • A confirmed onward or return flight
  • Proof of accommodation for your first nights — any of the stays above works
  • Carry your ETA approval confirmation for immigration on arrival

Entry rules and fees change — always confirm the current requirements for your nationality on the official Sri Lanka ETA portal before travelling.

Applications, requirements and fees are managed by the official Sri Lanka ETA portal. Check Requirements

Arrival information

Step 01
Land at CMB

You arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport near Negombo. Have your passport and ETA approval ready before you reach the immigration desks.

Step 02
Clear immigration

Show your ETA confirmation and onward ticket. Officers stamp your tourist entry — keep the stamp safe for any in-country extension later.

Step 03
Money & SIM

Withdraw rupees at the arrivals-hall ATMs and pick up a tourist SIM with cheap data — both desks are right past baggage claim.

Step 04
Onward transfer

Pre-booked hotel cars and official airport taxis wait outside. Colombo is about an hour south; Negombo's beaches are ten minutes away.

Travel guides + tips

☀️
Best time to visit

December–March is prime for the south and west coasts and the hill country; May–September suits the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay. Sri Lanka is a year-round island — there's always a coast in season.

🚗
Getting around

A private car and driver is the easy, affordable way to cover the island. The Kandy–Ella train is one of the world's great rail journeys, and tuk-tuks handle short hops in every town.

💳
Money & tipping

The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) is the local currency — see the live rates above. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and cities; carry cash for rural areas. A 10% service charge is common; small tips are appreciated.

🎒
What to pack

Light, breathable clothing for the coast and warmer layers for cool hill-country nights in Ella and Nuwara Eliya. Bring modest cover for temples, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light rain layer in the green season.
