Arugam Bay is surf-town shorthand for the whole east coast. The right-hand point break here is world-class — long, consistent and forgiving enough for improvers — and the town that has grown around it is all the better for staying small: one road, palm shacks, beach bars and a sunrise that arrives over the water.
When the south coast clouds over from May, the east comes into its own. Even if you don't surf, A-Bay is the place to do very little for a week — lagoon safaris, elephants on the road to Kumana, and seafood by candlelight.
