A walled Dutch-colonial town on a promontory in the south, now the island’s most stylish square kilometre.
Galle Fort is a living UNESCO World Heritage site — a 17th-century Dutch fortification whose ramparts still ring a grid of coral-stone streets. Inside, the old warehouses and merchant houses have become design hotels, jewellers, cafés and concept stores, but the place never tips into a museum. People still live here.
Spend an afternoon getting lost in the lanes, then walk the walls at golden hour as the whole town comes out to watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean. It is the easiest, most rewarding stroll in Sri Lanka.
