Sigiriya is the image that sells Sri Lanka, and for once the photograph undersells the place. A sheer granite monolith erupts from flat green forest, and on top sit the ruins of King Kashyapa's 5th-century royal citadel — gardens, frescoes, and a staircase that passes between the paws of a colossal lion carved into the rock.
Climb early. The 1,200 steps are steep and the midday heat is real, but the summit rewards you with one of the great views in Asia and a genuine sense of how audacious this place was 1,500 years ago. Pair it with neighbouring Pidurangala for the classic shot of the rock itself.
