South Coast
Long, lonely beaches and quiet coves at the south coast’s easternmost, least-developed stretch.
Tangalle is where the south coast finally exhales. The crowds of Mirissa and Unawatuna thin out, and in their place is a string of wide, near-empty beaches, rocky coves and a handful of design-led hideaways. It's the place to come when you want the south coast without the scene.
Some beaches here have strong currents and are better for walking than swimming, but the trade-off is space and silence. Nearby Rekawa is one of Sri Lanka's most important sea-turtle nesting beaches, where five species come ashore after dark.
Empty beachesLong, uncrowded sweeps of sand — Medaketiya, Goyambokka and Silent Beach.

Mulkirigala Rock TempleA cave temple complex on a rock, often called a "little Sigiriya".
Hiriketiya bayA horseshoe surf-and-swim cove that’s become a boho favourite.
